About the course
Seminar goal: To learn about and practice new techniques and coping strategies for working with anxiety in this client group.
Summary: In the morning we will share knowledge about anxiety in this client group, and learn about the compassionate approach to anxiety which views it as ‘an ally to be listened to’ rather than ‘an enemy to be fixed’.
In the afternoon we will identify and practice new techniques and coping strategies for working with anxious clients, including compassionate self-talk, mindfulness, and body-focused tools.
The day will begin and end with compassionate attention to our own anxiety.
Proposed schedule:
10.00 Welcome and house-keeping; Introductions; Contracting and confidentiality
10.15 Mindfulness exercise: identifying with own anxiety and sharing with self
10.30 Small group discussion: Why am I doing this session?
Large group feedback: identifying and sharing learning goals
10.45 Session one: Mapping the terrain – what does anxiety look like in your client

About the facilitator
Briony is a counsellor, but also offers training and supervision. She has trained counsellors at Willows Counselling Service in Swindon where she remains a consultant trainer, and at the University of East London.
